The 185 lots are nearly all paintings, many of them of modest value. There are though 23 contemporary works estimated more than 30 000 euros, mostly realized in the 1950 - 1970 period. In the 200 000 to  400 000 range  are another "oil plus mixed media" by Martial RAYSSE and three more traditional oils by Jean FAUTRIER, CHRISTO and Hans HARTUNG. Japanese and European Art

Mallet

Tokyo

A beautiful catalogue of 368 lots divided in four sections among which the "modern and contemporary art by Japanese artits" section dominates in terms of high value items. A gouache on paper by Kazuo SHIRAGA and a "sumi ink on paper" by Jiro YOSHIHARA are estimated 3 - 4 million Yens. Not far off is an oil on panel by SHIRIGA  and  a "sumi ink and charcoal on paper" by YOSHIHARA. In what we would call the "European Art" sections, the highest estimates are for a gouache on paper by Serge POLIAKOFF (3.5 - 4.5 million yens), an oil on canvas by Maurice de VLAMINCK (3 - 4 million)  and a watercolour (plus crayon and indian ink) by Joan MIRO (also 3- 4 million). A litho by Marc CHAGALL and a couple of inocuts by Pablo PICASSO are estimated slightly less.

Contemporary Art

Phillips

London

This auction was a success, even though a number of works among the 214 lots could not be auctioned off. Compared with a number of past auctions of contemporary art at Philips, the prices were "reasonable" one could say. Among the most striking results: A work by George CONDO estimated 100 - 150 000 pounds sold for 422 500; one by Sam FRANCIS also estimated 100 000 - 150 000 sold for 194.500; a Robert LONGO estimated 18 000 - 22 000 sold for 86 500; a BANSKY estimated 40 000 - 60 000 sold for 86 500. At the other end of the scale: an Israel LUND estimated 4000 - 6000 pounds sold for 20 000.

Modern and Contemporary Art

Chantilly Encheres

Paris

The 190 lots are to a very large extent paintings, apparently not of considerable value. (The few sculptures enjoy more significant estimates, say in the tens of thousand euros). There is though a "mixed technique" by Raya SORKINE dating back to 1936 and estimated 10 000 - 12 000 euros. Strangely drawing attention in the catalog is a well known picture - serigraphic - by Roy LICHTENSTEIN estimated 500 - 600 euros only.

Old Paintings, Artwork and Music Instruments

Ogerblanchet

Paris

Not a high level auction. A catalog of many lots (252) but only some 20 paintings. Three works of the 18th century are worth to be mentioned: an oil on canvas by Jean-Louis DEMARNE estimated 20 000 - 25 000 euros; and two gouaches by Charles-Louis CLERISSEAU, both estimated 10 000 - 12 000 euros.

Tue Mar 11 2014

Women's Paintings

Tajan

Paris

Though there were obviously many female painters, this auction will only include 44 lots; essentially 19th century works. Topping the estimates is an oil on canvas by Joan MITCHELL (180 000 - 250 000 euros). Far behind are a gouache by Natalia GOUTCHAROVA (estimated 40 000 - 60 000) and another oil on canvas by Aurélie NEMOURS (20 000 - 30 000). An oil by Antonietta BRANDEIS and two by Perle FINE are estimated 8000 - 12000.

Mon Mar 10 2014

Paintings, furniture and Art Objects

Massol

Paris

Over 300 lots of which more than one third are paintings (or assimilated). On the basis of the estimates, less than ten are of significant interest; they are essentially of the 19th century. Standing clearly out is an oil on canvas by Georges MATHIEU estimated 60 000 - 80 000 euros. In the 15 000 to 25 000 range are two "gouache and black ink on paper" by Fernand LEGER and an oil by Robert COMBAS. Closer to 12 000 euros are a pastel on paper by Andre MASSON, an "acrylic and filt on canvas" by Gudmundur ERRO and an oil on canvas by Philippe PASQUA.

Thu Mar 6 2014

Contemporary Art and Design

Phillips

New-York

Again, as usual with Phillips, an extremely contemporary catalog. Out of the 33 lots, some 20 are - or can be assimilated to - paintings. Half of them are only a few years old. Completely out of line is a set of ten 1967 screeprints by Andy WARHOL estimated 1.5 - 2.5 million $'s. The other highest estimates, up to 700 000 $'s, go to two oils on canvas by Rudolf STINGEL They are followed closely by a "silkscreen + acrylic" of Richard PRINCE and an oil on canvas by Martin KIPPENBERGER, as well as other acrylics of Nate COWMAN and of KAWS. In the 100 000 to 200 000 $'s range we find Wade GUYTON, Mark GROTJAHN, Ugo RONDINONE, Joe BRADLEY, Oscar MORILLO, Adam MCEWEN, Sterling RUBY and Jacob KASSAY.

Considering the fate of the paintings (or assimilated) which we mentioned - as well as some others - this was quite a successful auction. As usual, many sales took place at a price within (or close to) the estimation bracket. Much higher went the acrylic by Youhan Yu (lot 31 estimated 30 000 - 50 000 and sold 269 000 $'s); the acrylic by Mark FLOOD (lot 5 estimated 30 000 - 40 000 and sold 93 750); the mixed technique work by Oscar MURILLO (lot 33 estmated 120 000 - 180 000 and sold 317 000); the silkscreen by Nate COWMAN (lot 9 estimated 200 000 - 300 000 and sold 412 000); an oil  by Rudolf STINGEL (lot 10 estimated 500 000 - 700 000 and sold 989 000); the acrylic by Sterling RUBY (lot 20 estimated 100 000 - 150 000 and sold 293 000); the India ink by Sam MAYER (lot 22 estimated 15 000 - 25 000 and sold 43 750).

INNES and Fernand LEDUC.

Mo Feb 24 2014

Various Artwork

A very mixed catalog of 930 lots  with mostly low value work apparently. Among the ten or so more remarkable paintings are two oils on canvas respectively by Luigi GIOLO (represented by two significant works) and Sebastiano RICCI estimated 24 000 - 26 000 euros and 22 000 - 24 000 euros. Not estimated much less are oils by Waymer Gio ENRICO, Pieter MUELENER, Emile DECKER, Filippo ARRIGO. Shadows Uplifted: African-American Fine Art

Swann

New-York

The catalog for this auction - primarily paintings -  shows that African-American art is extremely rich and much appreciated, at least in the USA. Among the famous figures are Hughe LEE-SMITH and Ossawa TANNER whose oils (lots 55 and 14) are estimated in the 60 000  to 120 000 $'s range; but also Wiliam H. JOHNSON, Malvin Gray JOHNSON and Charles WHITE. These are essentially 20th cenrury artists.

Wed Feb 12 2014

Paintings, Furniture and Art Objects

Tessier Sarrou

Paris

Not an upscale auction as such and there are a limited number of paintings only among the 316 lots. But three of them deserve attention: an oil on canvas by Sandro CHIA (still alive) estimated 30 000 - 40 000 euros; an oil on board by Edouard Frederic RICHTER estimated 9 000 - 12 000; and  an early 18th century framed tapestry - ome may assimilate to a painting - estimated 12 000 - 15 000 euros.

Mon Feb 10 2014

After WWII and Contemporary Paintings and Sculptures

Massol

Paris

A catalog of 176 lots of which more than  hundred are paintings (or assimilated), of extremely diverse value though. Over half-a-dozen are remarquable, some just a few years old. Estimated over 10 000 euros are an inkjet by Peter KLASEN, two acrylics by Philippe PASQUA and other acrylics by Gerard SCHLOSSER and Fernandez ARMAN; as well as a watercolour by Theo TOBIASSE.

Mon Feb 10 2014

Contemporary Art

Phillips

London

This is an extremely exclusive auction featuring 35 expensive lots, nearly all paintings (or assimilated). Most works are quite recent, say less than 30 years old. The majority of the estimates are in the hundreds of thousand Pounds with two beyond the million: an oil on canvas by Gerhard RICHTER and a much more recent "silkscreen ink on linen" by Christopher WOOL. Beyond 500 000 we find Andy WARHOL, Chris OFILI, Damien HIRST, Sterling RUBY and Yayoi KUSAMA.

This auction can certainly be viewed as successful though 8 lots, it seems, were withdrawn or did not get sold. For most paintings (or assimilated) which did get sold, the price was within the estimation bracket or slightly higher, including for the two most valuable works mentioned above. But here are a few examples of unexpectadly high prices reached: the acrylic work (lot 2) by Lucien SMITH estimated 40 000 - 60 000 Pounds, was sold for 194 500; the "painted tissue on steel" (lot 19) by Michelangelo PISTOLETTO  estimated 350 000 - 450 000 was sold for 614 500; the acrylic work by BANSKY (lot 26) estimated 150 000 - 250 000 was sold for 398 500; and Marc FLOOD's acrylic on canvas (lot 35) estimated 20 000 - 30 000 was sold for 80 500.

Western and Japanese Art

Mallet

Tokyo

A catalog of over 300 lots, essentially paintings (or assimilated) from both Japan and the Western world. Japanese art dominates, espeacially in terms of upscale valuations: half-a-dozen such lots are estimated millions of Yens. Works by the famous Tsuguharu FOUJITA and Sadamasa MOTONAGA (lots 94 and 156) are estimated 6 - 8 million Yens. But there are also expensive French works: Bernard CATHELIN (lot 294: 2.5 - 3.5 million), Marc CHAGALL (lot 205: 1.1 - 1.6 million) and Louis ICART (lot 290: 1.2 - 1.6 million). [Mid-January 2014, 1000 Yens are worth 7.0 Euros or 9.6 $'s]

It seems that the most valuable works did not get sold. Among the top sales were Ikuo HIRAYAMA (lot 115 estimated 2.5 - 3.5 million and sold 4.2 million), Marc CHAGALL (lot 205 estmated 1.2 - 1.6 million and sold 2 million) and Bernard CATHELIN (lot 294 estimated 2.5 - 3.5 million and sold 2.5 million Yens).

Thu Feb 6 2014

Old and 18th Century Paintings

Artemisia

Paris

A quite modest set of works the technique of which (oil on canvas or on panel....) is not always clearly spelled out. There are though half-a-dozen works (all 17th century oils apparently, essentially by Italian artists) worth mentioning; particularly an Anton Francesco PERUZZINI estimated 12 000 - 14 000 euros and an Alberto LIONELLI estimated 8 000 - 12 000. Four others are estimated in the 4 000 to 8 000 range: Remy VUIBERT, Willem Frederik VAN ROYEN, Francesco SIMONINI and Giacomo ZOBOLI.

The Giacomo ZOBOLI (lot 7) estimated only 4000 - 5000 was sold 10 000 euros.

Tue Feb 4 2014

Impressionist and Modern Art

Bonhams

London

A high-level auction with a catalog of 36 lots only, nearly all paintings (or assimilated). The majority of the most significant ones are French, typically dating back to the early 1900's; but Spain, Germany, Belgium and Poland are also represented. The top estimate of 100 000 - 150 000 Pounds goes actually to  a 1920 oil on canvas by the German Ury LESSER, flollowed closely by oils from Alfons WALDE and Isidro Nondell Y MONTURIOL. In the tens of thousand Pounds up to 80 000 are Raoul DUFY, Egon SCHIELE (two watercolours), Edouard VUILLARD, Andre LHOTE (two oils), Lonor FINI, Eugene ZAK and Maurice UTRILLO.

Most of the signiificant sales took place at a price within (or close to) the estimation bracket. Among the exceptions are: an oil on board by Edouard VUILLARD (lot 7) estmated 30 000 - 50 000  which for 72 100 Pounds; an "oil/ink/wax crayon/pencil on paper" by Joan MIRO (lot 26) estimated 25 000 - 35 000  sold 91 300; and another oil on board by Alfons WALDE (lot 30) estimated 80 000 - 120 000 sold for 278 500 Pounds.

Surrealism - Modern and Contemporary Art

Artprecium

Paris

An interesting catalog of 112 lots - virtually all are paintings - though most of them are estimated just a few thousand (if not a few hundred) euros. But there are some jewels: An oil by Louis VALTAT (lot 17) is estimated 30 000 - 40 000 and one by Michel ADREENKO (lot 56) 20 000 - 22 000. A photo-collage by Marcel DUCHAMP (lot 81): 20 000 - 30 000; inks on paper by René MAGRITTE and Alberto GIACOMETTI (lots 56 and 63): 10 000 - 15 000 euros. Gouaches by Zoran Antonio MUSIC and Maurice de VLAMINCK, over half-dozen lithos or eau-fortes by Joan MIRO......

There were some interesting surprises. The two "ink and gouache" by René MAGRITTE (lots 56 and 57) respectively estimated 20 000 - 22 000 and 10 000 - 15 000, were sold for 127 000 and 40 000 euros. The "black ink" by Remedias VARO URANGA (lot 74) estimated 6000 - 8000 sold for 35 000. A gouache by Henri MICHAUX (lot 37) estimated 2500 - 3000 sold 14 500. An "encre de chine sur papier" by Oscar DOMINGUEZ (lot 73) also estimated  2500 - 3000 sold for 25 000 euros. Unfortunately the prices reached by the Louis VALTAT and the Marcel DUCHAMP were not published.

Old and Modern Paintings, Furniture, Carpets, Tapestries and other Art Objects

Europe Auction

Paris

In the catalog of 166 lots , four Flemish or Dutch oils of the 16th or 17th century are worth to be mentioned. Except for the one by Pieter Frans CASTEELS, they are  basically anonymous. Their estimates are in the 10 000 to 20 000 Euros range.

"European Art and Old Masters"

Freeman's

Philadelphia

The 155-lot - all are paintings - catalog is in two parts (repeating somewhat strange designations!): "old masters" and - the major part - "European Art". All significant works to be auctioned seem to be oils on canvas. In the former part we find a work by Gaspar VAN WITTEL  estimated 25 000 - 40 000 $'s (lot 27). In the latter part, the estimate of a Josef VON BRANDT dominates at 70 000 - 100 000 $'s (lot 138) followed by 40 000 - 60 000 $'s for a Montague DAWSON (lot 73). There are a dozen other lots estimated in the 10 000 to 30 000 $'s range.

Old Master Paintings

In Kinsky

Vienna

A rather modest catalog of over 50 works,  mostly olis on canvas estimated several thousand Euros. Two lots stand out: lot 15 by Pietro DELLA VECCHIA estimated 15 000 - 30 000; and lot 40 realized in the circle of Francesco TIRONI estimated 8 000 - 16 000.

Mon. Jan. 27 2014

A rather modest auction which however includes four  Flemish paintings dating back to the 16th, 17th or 18th century. The first one - non-identified - (lot 42) is estimated 22 000 - 25 000 euros. The three others (lots 36, 37 and 41 - one on copper) are estimated in the 10 000 to 20 000 euros range.

Important Maritime Paintings and Decorative Arts

Bonhams

New-York

Among the 147 lots of this "maritime" catalog, our interest goes essentially to the numerous oils on canvas of boats, from the 17th to the 20th century. The number of such works - many magificent! - by Samuel WALTERS, or by James Edward BUTTERSWORTH or by Antonio Nicolo Gasparo JOCOBSEN is striking. Some fifty of the paintings are estimated more than (or around) 10 000 $'s. Top estimates (200 000 - 300 000 $'s) go to Robert SALMON (lot 98) and to James Edward BUTTERSWORH (lot 132). Also not far from 100 000 $'s are works by Montague DAWSON  (lots 138 and 139) and by Dominic SERRES (lot 60).

Clearly, good paintings of boats are much appreciated. Whereas a fraction of them were not sold, many found a buyer at a price within  - or close to - the estimation bracket. Four Samuel WALTERS did much better, like lot 104 sold 100 000 while estimated 40 000 - 50 000; or lot 105 sold 40 000 while estimated 15 000 - 25 000 $'s. Other good surprises were the sale for 93 750 of a Montague DAWSON estimated 40 000 - 60 000; or for 70 000 of a Joseph HEARD estimated 15 000 - 25 000; or for 56 250 of a John HUGHES estimated 25 000 - 35 000; or for 28 750 of  a Nicolo Gasparo JACOBSEN estimated 12 000 - 18 000 (lot 136). The top lots did roughly as expected: the Robert SALMON and the James Edward BUTTERSWORTH, both estimated 200 000 - 300 000, went respectively for 221 000 and 185 000 $'s.

Thu. Jan. 23 2014

Modern Art

Tajan

Paris

A rather modest catalog of 153 lots, essentially paintings. Only a dozen of them - actually all oils - are estimated more than (or around) 10 000 euros. Among them is a Camille BOMBOIS estimated 25 000 - 35 000 euros (lot 98).

19th Century European, Victorian and British Impressionists

Bonhams

London

Over 140 paintings of diverse origin - nearly all oils and a few water-colours - out of which 26 are estimated more than 20 000 Pounds. Top estimates go to Sir Alfred James MUNNINGS (lot 89: 105 000 - 200 000 Pounds) represented by several expensive works and to John Atkinson GREENSHAW (lot 89: 150 000 - 200 000 Pounds). Following not much below are Vittorio REGGIANINI (lot 61: 50 000 - 70 000) with a couple of works, Stanhope Alexander FORBES (lot 99: 50 000 - 70 000), Dorothy SHARP (lot 129: 40 000 - 60 000) and others.

Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary Art

Matsart Auctioneers

Jerusalem

An exceptionally admirable catalog, succintly documented, with 287 lots, all paintings or assimilated (except a dozen sculptures). Over one third of them are estimated more than 20 000 $'s. Though Israeli artists are well represented, the bulk of the works are by French, and to a lesser extent by Americans. Moïse KISLING, Raoul DUFY, Marc CHAGALL Reuven RUBIN, Bernard BUFFET, Pablo PICASSO, Mané KATZ, Victor VASARELY, Sam FRANCIS, Andy WARHOL and Keith HARING are each represented by several high level works. Top estimates well beyond 100 000 $'s go to lots 139 and 146 (Marc CHAGALL), lot 60 (Abraham MINTCHIN), lot 134 (Moïse KISLING), lot 155 (Bernard BUFFET), lot 148 (Reuven RUBIN), 118 (Henri HAYDEN) and lot 175 (Mané KATZ).

It seems that most of  these many lots did not get sold. 1. Traditional Balinese 2. Indo European 3. Japanese contemporary  4. Prominent and established Asian modern artists  3. Contemporary realism  4. Founding fathers of Indonesian modern and contemporary art  5. Artists on Bali.

Some 24 lots are estimated 10 000 US$'s or more, mostlly in the lower tens of thousand. Topping the list are oils on canvas by Indonesians Hendra GUNAWAN (lot 77  120 000 - 175 000 US$'s),  AFFANDI (lot 78  80 000 - 120 000 US$'s), Shrihadi SOERDASONA (lot 41  60 000 - 80 000 US$'s); the latter artist being represented by several works.

The top-lots were sold at prices close to the mentioned estimates. GUNAWAN: 181 000 $'s; AFFANDI: 134 000 $'s. The SOERDASONA was apparently not sold. [These US $ figures are approximate as the auction was conducted in SGD's (Singapore $'s ) - 1000 SGD's are worth 782 us$'s]

Asian and Other Works of Art

Est-Ouest Auctions

Singapore

A big auction of over 400 lots, including some 120 paintings (or assimilated), in larger part by Japanese artists. Many of them are estimated more than 10 000 SGD's (Singapore Dollars). Lots 20, 22 and 24 are estimated 75 000 - 110 000 SGD's: a Pierre-Auguste RENOIR,  a Jean-Pierre CASSIGNEUL (oils on canvas) and a Le-Fan LEE (pigments on canvas). There are also a number of  less estimated PICASSO's and miscellaneous French works. [1000 SGD's are worth 579 Euros or 787 US$'s early Ja,uary 2014].

The outcome of the auction is considered satisfactory as 69% of the bids were successful. Most of the paintings were sold at a price close to the estimation bracket. There were some positive exceptions: the Li-Fan LEE estimated 75 000 - 110 000 was sold for more than 141 000 SGD's; the RENOIR estimated 65 000 - 95 000 was sold 118 000;  and the Walesse TING estimated 50 000 - 75 000 was sold for over 100 000 DGD's.

Russian Drawings, Paintings and Sculptures

MC Fine Arts

Monaco

A marvellous catalog of over 160 lots; mostly paintings, watercolours and gouaches among which fiveteen are estimated over 10 000 Euros. Particularly remarkable are lots 329, 330 and 332 i.e. oills by Yvan AIVAZOVSKII, Yvan CHOULTZE and Fiodor BROAMIKOV, all estimated in the 30 000 to 60 000 Euros range.

For many lots - especially at the high end - no sale price  is provided, presumably because they were not sold. For the successful sales, the price is most often within the estimation bracket. This meant 33 176 euros  for the mentioned AIVAZOVSKII, 38280 for the mentioned CHOULTZE and 17 864 for an oil on canvas by Michel KIKOINE indeed estimated 15 000 - 20 000 euros (lot 323). Interestingly, a watercolour by Alexander SAMOKHVALOV (lot 237) modestly estimated 1000 - 1500 euros got sold for 6380.

Contemporary Art

Im Kinsky

Vienna

An extremely attractive catalog focusing on Austrian artists of the last century and featuring well "creative Vienna". The more than 200 lots are nearly all pictorial works - there are a few sculptures - to a large extent oils on canvass though a great variety of techniques is represented. Some sixty works are estimated above (or around) 10 000 Euros with many in the tens of thousands. Whereas the top estimate goes to a sole work by Maria LASSNIG (70 000 - 140 000), Arnulf RAINER is represented by a number of works some of which also receive high estimates. To a lessor extent, the same could be said about Hans STANDACHER, Hubert SCHMALIX, Herbert BRANDL and Adolf FROHNER.

"Antiquities and Pictures of the 19th Century"

Boetto

Genova, Italy

A rich but mixed catalog of 950 lots of which many are paintings, to a large extent by Italian artists of the 16th, 17th, 18th or 19th century. Some of these works remain anonymous and are labelled Napolitan, Genovese, Roman, Bolognese, Toscan or Emilian school (or other); some are of typically religious nature. About 40 of the paintings are estimated over - or around -  5000 Euros (with a large fraction over 10 000 Euros). Three works stand out and are estimated up to 65 000 Euros: they are by IL TODISCHINI, Telemaco SIGNERINI and by a non-identified Genovese artist. The two works by Giuseppe ASSERETO and by Jacques Charles OUDRY are also highly estimated. There are very few "multiples" i.e. by the same artist; we noticed two by Attilio PRATELLA, both estimated 15 000 - 16 000 Euros.

Wed. Mar. 20 2013

Contemporary Art

Millon

Paris

A large number of the 155 lots of various geographical origins are paintings (or assimilated), indeed mostly generated during the 20th century. One may think that by now - year 2013 - "contemporary artists" relate essentially to the second half of that century. This does not appear to be the case: if we examine the 40 works in the catalog estimated over 10 000 Euros, we notice that only four of their 27 authors are borne after 1950. As to the highest estimates - up to 100 000 Euros - they go to Lin FENGMIAN, Andy WARHOL (both represented by a number of works), Jean-Michel ATLAN, Theodoros STAMOS and Andre  LANSKOY; all are borne before 1926. Of course, this observation is indicative at best.

Wed. Mar. 20 2013

Modern Paintings and Art Deco

Thierry de Maigret

Paris

There are numerous paintings (or assimilated) among the 343 lots, mostly of the second half of the 19th or the first half of the 20th century by French artists. Oil on canvass dominates, but there are also many gouaches and watercolors. Over a dozen of these works (virtually all oils) are estimated over 5000 Euros. The high point of the sale will be "La Rosa" by Camille PISSARO estimated 180 000 - 220 000 Euros. A Jacques-Emile BLANCHE and a Bernard BUFFET are estimated in the 40 000 to 50 000 range whereas two other works  by the same are in the 20 000 to 40 000 range. The estimate of an oil on board by Edouard VUILLARD is somewhat lower.

Modern and Contemporary Art

Dorotheum

Vienna

The majority of the 230 lots in the catalog - dominated by Austrian authors - are paintings (or assimilated). A number of them are by "true contemporary" artists, i. e. born after 1950 and are quite interesting. There are over 20 lots estimated over 5000 Euros but we found few with relatively high estimates: an oil on canvass of 40 000 - 60 000 by Ernst FUCHS (represented by a number of works) and two quite original works by Otto MUEHL both estimated 18 000 - 25 000 Euros, making use of beaverboard i.e. a material made of compressed wood fiber. Both these artists qualify rather as "modern".

"Made in California: Contemporary Art"

Bonhams

Los Angeles

Extremely interesting  catalog of 118 lots, mostly paintings (or assimilated).Though this is indeed contemporary art, many of the artists are born during the first decades of the 20th century. Even if innovative materials - or combinations thereof - are often used, oil on canvass still prevails. Among the 18 lots estimated above (or around) 10 000 $'s, there are some stars: Robert IRWIN (100 000 - 150 000), Paul WONNER, Nathan OLIVEIRA (both 40 000 - 60 000), John REGISTER (30 000 - 50 000). Old Master Paintings

Hampel

Munich

Extremely impressive catalog of some 150 lots concentrating on four or five century-old paintings, in large part by Italian artists, but including also a significant number of Flemish works. Quite a number of them are anonymous or - we understand - attributed. Oil on canvass of course dominates though there is frequent use of wood and sometimes of copper. Most of the estimates are in the tens of thousand Euros, even for works the themes of which could appear outdated to many. Estimated beyond 100 000 Euros are Pier Francesco FIORENTINO, Jan van SOREL, Michele TOSINI and Pieter BRUEGHEL the YOUNGER. There are a couple of works by Domenico TINTORETTO.

"Under the Influence" Contemporary Art

Phillips de Pury

New-York

A catalog of truly contemporary art indeed, nearly exclusively of paintings: a majority of the 265 lots are 21st century work. Though a variety of "modern" techniques prevail (like chromogeneous prints, silverscreens, even rubber or nailpolish) there are a number of oils on canvas, even among the most recent paintings. Over 40 lots are estimated more than 20 000 Euros; many of them in the 20 000 - 40 000 range. Standing out are a triple "silkscreen on Saunders watercolor paper" by Christopher WOOD estimated 200 000 - 300 000, a "silkscreen and digital inkjet print on canvas and wood" by Guyton WALKER  estimatd 120 000 - 180 000, an "oilstick on paper" by Jean-Michel BASQUIAT estimated 90 000 - 120 000 and an "ink on paper on board" by Andy WARHOL estimated 80 000 - 120 000. Note that there are several significant works by the two latter artists.
